Autograph letter signed : Shauffhausen, to George Gray, Jr, 1840 Aug. 10.

Saying she has been much gratified by a letter from Grandpapa, and, if they all keep well, expects to find them much improved when she returns. An account of her travels. "Papa joins in kindest love to you & Sophia, Mary, Jane, and Andrew." [While Mr. and Mrs. Gray are abroad, the children are being cared for by their Uncle Andrew, at Cupar. Effie is probably in London, perhaps with the Ruskins; see her letter of 2 September 1840]. On stationery featuring an engraved scene of the "Vue de la Chute du Rhine, prise au dessus du Fischenz."

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
